EU Pilot 5

UP

The UP Pilot is located in the southwestern part of Hungary close to Lake Balaton which is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe. The average air temperature is 10 degrees Celsius and the annual precipitation is about 700 mm. The area receives moderate light on average 1900 hour sunshine annually.Good fertile soils for agricultural production are in the area, the typical soil type is Cambisol and Luvisol with favorable water management.

PILOT CHALLENGES (CONTEXT)

A large number of site-specific management practices is applied on the field, however the efficiency and the profitability of these techniques isn’t to evaluate. We want to give an expert advice as a practical applicability.

PILOT OBJECTIVES

Field trials were set up on ca. 800 ha arable land to compare site-specific management versus conventional agricultural management. To achieve this goal homogenous management zones on 800 ha were delineated. On the one-half of each management zones running conventional management practices, however on the other half of the given management zones running site-specific management practices. Management practices mean different NPK fertilization rates, sowing doses, liming and plant protection.

PILOT INNOVATIONS

• Innovative 3D soil properties map and visualized 3D soil moisture content

• Innovation in computer aided weed detection and spatial analyses.

Use Case

Pilot is located in the southwestern part of Hungary close to Lake Balaton which is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe.

Pilot scale

Field-scale. Our pilot area is a total amount of about 800 ha in two different farms

Land uses (crop types)

Typical crop rotations consist of wheat, maize, oilseed rape, sunflower, barley. The main livestock species are cattle and pigs.

Major agricultural and environmental projects

University of Pannonia: H2020- 2; other: SmartGazda. Please can you describe the content of the project + other projects (when are)

Landsupport H2020 project: The project aims at developing a web-based completely free, open-access GeoSpatial Decision Support System (S-DSS) devoted to reconciling agriculture, environmental sustainability and policy implementation.

  •

Smartgazda project: At the current level of agricultural production we can find a lot of new technical solutions and information technologies in agriculture. By using these methods farmers can really gain an advantage, optimize their use of input materials, reduce the environmental impact, increase productivity, and improve overall profitability. The main goal of the Smartgazda project is to evaulate the applicability of individual technological innovations in agricultural production on a scientific basis in cooperation with expert consultants.
