THE CURRENT SITUATION

The consumption of water resources is huge, soil salinization is aggravating and fertilizer is wasting.

 

The current and emerging innovation demands:


Improve water and fertilizer utilization efficiency, increase crop yield and reduce economic cost.

  

PILOT SOLUTION

Fertilizers and agricultural machinery enterprises will develop new products and promote them directly to farmers. Local government and the agricultural sector will promote policy on new technologies.

PILOT CHALLENGES (CONTEXT)

 

Water shortage is the main factor restricting the development of agriculture in southern Xinjiang. The excessive use of fertilizer has a lot of environmental problems. Scientific use of water and fertilizer in salinized and alkaline land and guarantee of crop yield are problems to be solved. 

 

PILOT OBJECTIVES

 

A variety of sensor data were used to obtain accurate soil quality evaluation information. Based on the existing irrigation system:

To carry out refined management of farmland and ensure crop yield

To reduce water and fertilizer consumption in the production process

PILOT INNOVATIONS

 

The pilot innovations mainly consist of advanced strategies and technologies for more efficient water and fertilization management, soil quality improvement, and the social-economic analyses and policy recommendations under different scenarios for the new agricultural practices.

Stakeholder Requirements

This pilot will accomplish 3 missions:

  • Basic data collection

Collection basic data for research institutions and use these data to obtain reliable high-precision models.

  • Application of research results

Application of research results from research institutions for farmers, farming cooperation, and regional authorities. Different end-user can get different scale information.

  • Technology demonstration and promotion

Based on the pilot, this might evolve into a "demonstration effect". More farmers are embracing the new technology.

Current Scenario

Farmers are using many primary technical systems for:

  • Intelligent irrigation system
  • Precision seeding system
  • Submembrane dropper technology

In this pilot, agricultural production methods are backward. Farmers hope to use new technologies to increase crop yields and reduce economic spending and pollutions.

Envisioned Scenario

There is already existing massive base farming data. It varies between data from satellite data, sensor data and Lab test data, etc. These data are offered by different systems, different data models, and a different format. For farmers, it is important to have better decisions from data, but they are not able to analyze this data and making conclusions.

Approach

Universities and research institutions can analyze data and create reliable products that can build better decision systems based on data analysis and benefit farmers.

Expected Benefits

  • The strategies for improving soil quality and function and benefits are reported;
  • The social-economic analyses are completed and reported;
  • The policies matching different soil management strategies are suggested;

In the project  are several stakeholders at different levels. All pilot partners relevant to the project are the stakeholders.

#1 Farmers

Farmers will support researchers in collecting soil samples and installing sensors in their fields to collect data. Make scientific decisions about farming activities using the application recommended by the researchers. They provide feedback to help researchers improve software functionality and performance.

 

Farmer is the end-user in the pilot. The effect of this project will be directly reflected by the farmers.

The Tarim University

In this pilot, Tarim University (TU) will collect sensor data and upload to cloud servers; install a sensor in the pilot; guide farmers to use application; promote new technologies in farmers. University has a role in the pilot as a researcher and developer. The main tasks to be carried out in the pilot is a basic research task. Universities will participate in experiments and evaluations also.

ZJU plays an important role in exploring and resolving scientific issues in the pilot.

ZJU will also participate in the relevant field experiments.

Pilot scale

The area is 16 hectare. The number of farms is 4.
Land uses (crop types)

The major crop is cotton which is a typical irrigated agriculture, which is irrigated by sub-membrane drip irrigation.
Major agricultural and environmental projects

Control the total amount of water, the Delineate red line of the total water and the coefficient rate, Reduce the total amount of fertilizers and pesticides applied.
Pilot objectives
