The China Pilot IEDSA/CAAS is located in Hebei Province in China.

THE CURRENT SITUATION

Lack of available water sources for agricultural production, degradation of soil quality and low nutrient use efficiency.

 

The current and emerging innovation demands:

Advanced strategies and technologies for improving water and nutrient use efficiencies as well as soil quality.

 

PILOT SOLUTION

  • Reduce the irrigation quantity and the utilization of nonconventional water for crop production. Improve soil quality and maintain crop yields. It is expected that the advanced strategies and technologies for crop production are adopted by the farmers.

PILOT CHALLENGES (CONTEXT)

 

Over-exploitation of underground water has caused serious ecological and environmental consequences. Therefore, the government had the policies to urgently reduce the use of agricultural water and meanwhile remain crop yields. The corresponding policies and recommendations both for governments and farmers are to be investigated. 

 

PILOT OBJECTIVES

 

The pilot objectives are as follows:

The knowledge and evaluation methods for soil quality improvement under different soil management strategies

Soil precision management for high crop yield and efficiency
 

The socio-economic analyses and policy recommendations for different soil management strategies

 

PILOT INNOVATIONS

 

The pilot innovations mainly consist of advanced strategies and technologies for more efficient water and fertilization management, soil quality improvement, and the social-economic analyses and policy recommendations under different scenarios for the new agricultural practices.

Stakeholder Requirements

This pilot will compile different soil management methods and investigate their impact on soil health and productivity for agricultural sustainability. The pilot will also be used to evaluate the socio-economic impact of the different soil management strategies under different scenarios and make the policy analyses.

Current Scenario

  • Farmers use a lot of chemical fertilizers in crop production leading to reduced soil quality;
  • The use of deep groundwater is necessary to ensure high wheat yield;
  • The social-economic impact of the adoption of new production technologies is unknown;

Envisioned Scenario

From the project, agro-management techniques will be developed. Different management strategies will be compared to determine the most promising soil management methods, which can improve soil quality and optimizing resource use efficiencies for sustainable intensification. Meanwhile, the suited policies by the adoption of these techniques are used for stakeholders for decision making.

Approach

For the agro-management techniques, the individual and combined effects of incorporating organic fertilizers and other carbon amendments, fertilizers as well as strategies to improve water and nutrient use efficiencies will be implemented.

 For the social-economic aspects, the social and economic impacts of the different managements and innovations are assessed towards more sustainable agriculture under different scenarios.

Stakeholder Description

In the project, we have several stakeholders at different levels. All pilot partners relevant to the project are the stakeholders.

#1 Farms-in the pilot area

Farmers covered in the pilot area participate in the application of conventional and new agro-management techniques. They run farms with different soil management strategies. They comment on the different soil management methods, and they are involved in the social-economic assessment.

Farmers are central to the pilot. They are connected directly or indirectly with all the stakeholders in the pilot.
#2 Farm area administration (FAA)

FAA is responsible for the coordination and arrangement of the pilot area. The main task for the FAA is to assist farmers in the implementation of the relevant activities and supply the necessary equipment and facilities for the investigation of the pilot area.

FAA is closed linked to farmers, and also gets detailed direct feedback from farmers in the responsible farm area.
#3 Fujian Agriculture and Forest University (FAFU)

FAFU will be responsible for the research and investigation of the impact of soil management methods on soil quality and explore the strategies for improving soil quality and function. FAFU will also participate in the experiments and evaluate the soil management methods.

FAFU plays an important role in exploring and resolving scientific issues in the pilot. FAFU will also participate in the relevant field experiments.
